The collection Trianon by Bernardaud reinterprets the conventions of classical design with remarkable freedom.
Its history began in 1810. Napoleon, who dreamt of taking up residence at the Palace of Versailles, commissioned 80,000 metres of fabric from the silk merchants of Lyon. This commission gave rise to a particularly rich repertoire of decorative designs.
However, the fabrics were delivered too late. Two years after the order was placed, just three months before Napoleon’s exile to St Helena, they finally arrived. They would therefore never be used.
Preserved since at least National Furniture Collection, these designs continue to inspire Bernardaud today. The company is breathing new life into them through a porcelain collection brimming with character.
Trianon is striking, first and foremost, for the vibrancy of its motifs.
Checkerboard patterns surrounded by rosettes sit alongside flowers, butterflies and small festive scenes. Together, they create a rich composition that never feels static.
The collection thus moves away from the traditional image one might have of the Empire style. The motifs are lighter, more spontaneous and sometimes even playful.
